2024 in review, new virtual meetup for webperf
Published
My top content in 2024 (new article!) #
I just published my 2024-in-review post for my technical blog content. Predictably, it's mostly about web performance and the indie web.
Shopify Theme Vitals updates #
I've continued building out my new website that presents Core Web Vitals performance data by Shopify theme: themevitals.com. I got some great feedback on understandability, so I redesigned it a bit and added more copy. I've also added aggregations across all themes.
I always felt icky about using Substack, so I went ahead and moved the newsletter over to Buttondown. You can check out the archives and subscribe to the newsletter at buttondown.com/theme-vitals/archive/.
I'm looking for a marquee/corporate sponsors that can be featured on the site. If you're interested, let me know! If you're not interested in a larger sponsorship but still want to support the project, consider a paid newsletter subscription or sponsoring me on Github or Ko-fi. See Sponsor for more info.
New virtual meetup for web performance #
I'm starting up a new virtual meetup for web performance called PerformanceObserver. We're still working on the website, but you can sign up now for our newsletter to be notified of all future events:
buttondown.com/performanceobserver.
From other folks on the web #
A few things by other folks I enjoyed consuming since last time:
- HTML for people by Blake Watson
- Breaking Up with Long Tasks or: how I learned to group loops and wield the yield and its demo tool by Rick Viscomi
- Wix SEO course
- Keyword Vitals Chrome extension for seeing how Core Web Vitals performance impacts keyword rankings
- Don't like AI overviews in your Google Search results? Try out some strategies on this page - seems to work great for desktop but not always on mobile: tenbluelinks.org/
- For fun (NSFW): SwearSky - swearing as it happens live on BlueSky in fun little clouds
/Offline #
I read over 100 books in 2024! I collected my favorites in this list on Bookshop.
This newsletter is reader-supported. If you buy a book from one of the links above, I'll earn some coffee money. You don't pay a higher price, and Bookshop.org supports independent booksellers.
