Social images, Shopify theme vitals, and Bluesky

Dynamic social share images using Cloudinary (new article!) #
I've used Cloudinary on my personal site for years now. It's made generating and serving responsive images so much easier (see my post on this).
I also use it for generating social graph images like this:
I just spoke about this topic at the 11ty meetup and decided to write it up as well for a broader audience. I can't wait to extend it even more in the future to add any article header images, which I tease how near the end. Read more...
Shopify Theme Vitals (new website!) #
I'm excited to announce that I've built a new website that analyzed and presents Core Web Vitals performance data by Shopify theme: themevitals.com.
This newsletter was delayed because I was working so hard to build that out and create a separate newsletter for it. If Shopify and web performance are an interest of yours, consider signing up for the monthly data and analysis updates on the Theme Vitals Substack newsletter.
I'm also looking for sponsors to ensure I can keep providing this service in the future!
Bluesky is now popping #
I quit Twitter a long time ago, but sadly many of the tech masses didn't migrate then. However, due to the latest X drama with blocking, folks are moving in droves. My follower and following counts have increased by about 200%. So, I've reduced the 💩 posts and have started talking about tech more there too. 😄 That's all to say, if you're on Bluesky and want to connect, you can follow me at bsky.app/profile/sia.codes. I still post on Mastodon, and neither account uses auto cross posting: @[email protected].
From other folks on the web #
A few things by other folks I enjoyed consuming this past month:
- The State of ES5 on the Web by Philip Walton
- How to provide better attribution for your RUM metrics by Tim Kadlec for SpeedCurve
- It's viewports all the way down | HTTP 203 video with Bramus and Jake (from 2022 but I recently discovered it)
- I was recently reminded of Utopia for scaling spacing and typography sizing. It's such a great resource.
/Offline #
- I read The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business by Charles Duhigg. It was really intriguing to learn how we create habits and break them, and it's already helped me reframe some of my behaviors and shift them. Highly recommend!
- I participated in a local plein air painting event and art show, and it looks like the painting I submitted sold!
- I have 3 figure drawing works that will be shown at an upcoming Durham Arts Council show.
This newsletter is reader-supported. If you buy a book from one of the links above, I'll earn some coffee money. You don't pay a higher price, and Bookshop.org supports independent booksellers.
